Beijing Opera

 

Beijing opera is a traditional Chinese theater and developed from 18th century. It combines with Chinese music element and dance and is one of the five majors operas in China.

There are four major types of Beijing opera performers. They are Sheng, Jing, Dan and Chou. Different types performers build on characters gender, age and position. Sheng hang usually is a male characters acts emperor and middle-aged man. There are xiaosheng, wusheng, hongsheng and wawasheng in Sheng. Dan hang usually acts female characters. Dan includes qingyi, huadan, wu dan and laodan. Jing hang is painted face and often act male characters with special features, which consists of zhengjing, fujing, wujing and erhualian. The last one is Chou hang, which is a clown role on male characters and divided to wenchou and wuchou.

The facial painting is one of the most important factors in Beijing opera, which is called lianpu in Chinese. Lianpu is an art the same as performing opera. It is painted colorful on actor’s eyes, forehead and cheeks. Lian pu represent their characters by using transformative and exaggerated figures. It is also painted wings of butterflies, bats and swallows on actor’s face.
