Hu Opera
Hu Opera, rooted in the folklore of the Huangpu River region, was formed in the late Qing Dynasty around the First Opium War (1840 to 1842). Historically, Hu Opera reflects many realistic and relatable aspects of life. Early Hu Opera performances consisted of only two performers. One played a musical instrument while the other told contemporary stories. Hu Opera progressed to adopt elements of movies and dramas over time, including lighting, expression and stage designs. By the 1930s, Hu Opera developed into an established and respectable art form. It is a very useful way to know the life and history of the people of Shanghai.
