The Start of Silk Road

Among several other benefits, the Silk Road was expanded across Europe, Asia and Africa in an effort to englarge territories and establish friendly relationships with neighboring countries. The birth of the Silk Road occurred In the West Han period when the diplomat Zhang Qian traveled west from Xian, bring with him a great amount of silk. This was the first time that China exchanged economic and culture ideas with western countries; hence allowing the Silk Road to become world-renowned. The starting point of Silk Road in the East is in Xian. It is the prosperity of Xian in that period that laid the solid foundation for launching the impressive Silk Road. Xian made great contributions to the establishment of the Silk Road.

Qin Opera (Qian Qiang)

Qinqiang, also known as Luan tan, is a traditional folk opera that originated in the northwest Shaanxi Province. It is the oldest among national opera arts in China. Qinqiang was derived from the ancient folk songs and dances of the Shaaxi, Gansu and Ningxia regions and is most prevalent in the northwestern portion of China. More than ten characters grace the stage in each performance, including four "Sheng" (male), six "Dan" (female), two "Jing" (male with painted face) and one "Chou" (Clown).

The singing methods. face-painting and costume found in Qinqiang are unique to this specific type of opera and result in powerful and sonorous tunes. Such traditional practices have been well maintained over the years allowing present-day performances to paint an accurate depiction of the originals.

In fact, Qinqiang is the most well-preserved opera among over 700 operas that are still performed. Thus, Qinqiang is a distinctive aspect of the Shaanxi culture and a must-see while staying in Xian. Wugi Theater and Yisu Theater conveniently offer weekly Qinqiang performances and would be great choices to complete the Xian experience.
